i just discovered your blog while looking for information on lillian roth ("i'll cry tomorrow" was on tcm earlier today) and am intrigued...i'm a gay man in my mid 50s and have always been enamored of old films, particularly those of the pre-code 30s. of the leading men of the era, i've always been fascinated by robert montgomery, joel mccrea and charles farrell as beautiful specimens of men with somewhat feminine attributes. i note your inclusion of lee tracy, however i could never get past his nasal vocal delivery, though he was certainly pretty to look at! early randolph scott, too, is fun to look at, unlike his later, angry westerns. i'll look forward to your future entries!

Ah, palmy days! What a film.
You're right about Chaplin and Keaton, they definitely did groundbreaking work with gender, I just figured they went without saying.
And yes, Rains is totally the man. Highly under appreciated.

I just noticed that you did indeed include Rains, even got his own follow-up post. Well-deserved. That man was a mystic.

All the while I was wondering why Eddie hadn't made the list...only to find that he's at number one. I'm surprised. Glad my friend and I aren't the only ones. I was just watching Palmy Days...

I especially agree with Edward G., Cagney, Gilbert, and Montgomery. On a personal note, I would have had Chaplin and Keaton somewhere on the list, along with Claude Rains, Bogart, Lorre, Karloff, and possibly William Powell, among others, but that's me. Interesting idea for a meme. I love it. Beautiful journal, as well.

Right now, let's rent a limousine and head for the nearest drive-in. The screen and sky will be dark, and us... the stars, talking about movies in a way that's better than seeing them.
